Members’ Council

The Members’ Council will serve as an advisory body representing the voice of IAM members, ensuring that their perspectives and needs shape the Institute's strategic direction, services, and professional standards.

Your Voice in the IAM

The Members’ Council is a consultative and advisory body established under Regulation 10 of the IAM Membership Regulation (IAM-MEM-REG-2026-001). It provides a formal channel for Professional Member voice, ensuring that member perspectives shape the Institute’s strategic direction. The Council is advisory in nature — all formal decisions remain with the Board of Directors.

Where the Board takes a decision that diverges materially from a Council recommendation, it shall publish a written rationale within 30 calendar days. The Council shall meet not fewer than twice per year. All Professional Members in Good Standing may attend. Bye-Laws governing the operation of the Members’ Council shall be published by 31 December 2026.

All Professional Members in Good Standing may attend Council meetings and participate in consultations.

Purpose and Responsibilities

The Members’ Council serves several important functions within the IAM

Strategic Advice

Provide input and recommendations on the IAM's strategic direction, helping to shape priorities that reflect member needs and professional trends.

Member Feedback

Gather and communicate member views, concerns, and suggestions to the Board of Directors, ensuring the member voice is heard at the highest level.

Policy Review

Review and comment on proposed policies, membership structures, Certified Programme developments, and service improvements before implementation.

Professional Advocacy

Champion the interests of administrative and business management professionals, advocating for recognition and advancement of the profession.

Regional Representation

Ensure diverse geographic representation, bringing perspectives from members across different regions and cultural contexts.

Member Engagement

Encourage active member participation in IAM activities and initiatives, fostering a vibrant and engaged professional community.

Council Structure

How the Members’ Council is organised

Council Chair

The Members’ Council is chaired by the Chair of the Board or a nominated Director. The Chair leads Council meetings, sets the agenda in consultation with members, and represents the Council in discussions with the Board of Directors.

Member Representatives

Member Representatives serve as the working committee of the Council. These members are elected from different membership grades and geographic regions to ensure broad representation.

  • One Representative drawn from each continent in which the Institute has members in Good Standing
  • Any country with more than 100 members in Good Standing is entitled to appoint one further Representative
  • Representatives provide continuity between Council meetings
  • All Professional Members in Good Standing may attend Council meetings

General Membership

All IAM members are part of the Members’ Council and can participate in its activities. This includes attending Council meetings, responding to consultations, and engaging through the IAM’s consultation and feedback mechanisms.

Ways to participate in the Members’ Council

Attend Council Meetings

Attend Members’ Council meetings, which are open to all Professional Members in Good Standing. The Council meets not fewer than twice per year.

The Council regularly seeks member input on proposed changes, new services, and strategic priorities. Your feedback directly influences decisions.

Serve as a Representative

Consider standing as an Member Representative. It's an opportunity to shape the IAM's future and develop leadership skills.

Join Working Groups

Participate in specialist working groups that focus on specific topics such as Certified Programmes, CPD, professional standards, or regional development.

Regional Networks

Connect with other members in your region through local networks and events organised by regional representatives.

Contact your regional representative or the Council directly with ideas, concerns, or suggestions at any time.

Council Meetings

The Members’ Council shall meet not fewer than twice per year to discuss matters affecting members and the profession. Meetings may be held virtually to enable participation from the IAM’s global membership. All Professional Members in Good Standing may attend.
